Learn21 Alternative

The Learn21 alternative with the price and the parent payment on the page.

Learn21 is a nonprofit started by K-12 technology people, and its Tech Director Toolbox is a serious product. If you are comparing the two, the differences that decide it are narrower than a feature grid suggests: whether you can see the price before a call, whether damage turns into a family invoice that gets paid online, and whether your own systems can talk to it.

Common ground

Start with what is the same.

Both platforms come from people who ran school technology. Learn21 was founded in 2008 as an education-led nonprofit in Cincinnati. We were built inside a public school district in 2012 and are employee-owned through an ESOP. Neither of us answers to a venture or private-equity investor, so neither of us is pricing for an exit.

Both cover the core of a 1:1 program: device inventory with check-out and check-in, mobile scanning, repair tracking with a parts inventory, a help desk that links tickets to the device, and SIS and MDM integrations. If your evaluation stops at that list, you will find both acceptable, and the decision comes down to the four things below.

Where the two differ

Four differences that decide the evaluation.

Pricing

You can budget before you talk to anyone.

Learn21 lists “custom pricing based on your school size”, with bundle savings across its Toolbox products. Every one of our tiers is on the pricing page, from $1,000 a year flat under 700 students down to $0.80 per student above 50,000, and every tier includes every feature. A 3,000-student district pays $4,050 a year, and you can confirm that without filling out a form.

Family billing

A cracked screen becomes a paid invoice, on the same record.

Learn21's product pages describe repairs, parts and warranty tracking, but not invoicing families or collecting payment. We generate the invoice from the damage incident, send it to the guardian, and take payment online through the processor your district connects: ConnexPoint, Stripe, Square, PayPal, SchoolPay, and four others. The payment posts back to the incident that started it. If fee collection matters to your program, ask Learn21 to show you that flow in their demo.

Integration

Your own systems can read and write to it.

Every district can issue its own scoped API tokens and read or write devices, users, tickets, incidents and invoices, with webhooks that push device, ticket, incident and invoice events to you as they happen. No surcharge on any tier. Learn21's site does not document a public API, so ask them what integration access looks like if you plan to connect a data warehouse or a finance system.

Procurement paperwork

The accessibility and security answers are already published.

Our VPAT 2.5 for WCAG 2.1 AA and Revised Section 508 is public, as are our hosting certifications (SOC 2, ISO/IEC 27001:2022, CSA STAR Level 1) and our CISA Secure by Design pledge. Learn21 lists FERPA, COPPA, CIPA and SOPIPA alignment on its homepage. Whichever vendor you choose, ask for the VPAT before you sign; it is the document a complaint will be measured against.

Being straight with you

Where Learn21 may be the better fit.

A comparison page that never concedes anything is not worth reading. These are real reasons to choose them.

  • You want account provisioning from the same vendor.

Learn21 sells TDT-Identity, which creates and updates student and staff accounts from SIS enrollment. We do not provision accounts ourselves. We partner with ClassLink instead and recommend ClassLink OneSync for it, and we are ClassLink Rostering certified, so the accounts OneSync creates and the users we roster line up. That is two vendors where Learn21 is one.

  • Your SIS needs a named connector.

Learn21 lists 23 SIS platforms, including Aeries, Synergy and Clever. We have first-class connectors for PowerSchool, Genesis and Veracross, ClassLink certification, and a vendor-agnostic OneRoster 1.1 / 1.2 connector that works with any SIS that exports OneRoster. Ask your SIS whether it does before you rule us out.

  • You run smart lockers or Absolute.

Learn21 lists a LocknCharge FUYL locker integration and Absolute among its device connections. We do not integrate with either today.

FAQ

Questions districts ask when comparing us with Learn21.

What is Learn21?

Learn21 is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit based in Cincinnati, founded in 2008 by K-12 educational technology professionals. Its Tech Director Toolbox includes TDT-Asset for device inventory, TDT-Helpdesk for IT ticketing, and TDT-Identity for account provisioning from SIS data. It also runs professional learning, data privacy services and the EdTech Leaders Alliance.

How much does Learn21 Tech Director Toolbox cost?

Learn21 does not publish rates. Its product pages describe custom pricing based on school size, with savings for bundling TDT-Asset, TDT-Helpdesk and TDT-Identity. Our full per-student tier ladder is published on our pricing page, so you can hold the two side by side once you have their quote.

Does Manage1to1 do everything Learn21 does?

Not everything. We cover device inventory, help desk, damage incidents, family invoicing with online payment, a self-service portal and reporting on one platform. We do not provision user accounts ourselves; we partner with ClassLink and recommend ClassLink OneSync for that, where Learn21 sells TDT-Identity. We also do not integrate with LocknCharge lockers or Absolute. If buying provisioning from the same vendor, or either of those integrations, is a requirement, weigh it honestly.

Can families pay for device damage online?

Yes. The invoice is generated from the damage incident, sent to the guardian, and paid online through the payment processor your district connects: ConnexPoint (Vanco), Stripe, Square, Authorize.Net, PayPal, Braintree, Adyen, Global Payments or SchoolPay. Cash and check can be recorded alongside. The payment posts back to the incident and the device record.

Can we switch from Learn21 to Manage1to1?

Yes. Students, staff and guardians come from your SIS through OneRoster or one of our first-class connectors, and devices come from your MDM, so most of the data does not need to leave Learn21 at all. Historical assignments and custom fields can be imported from an export. Most districts go live within two weeks, with no professional-services contract required, and summer is the easiest window.

Is Manage1to1 a nonprofit like Learn21?

No. We are employee-owned through an Employee Stock Ownership Plan, so every employee owns a share of the company. Like Learn21, we have no venture or private-equity investor. Our rates have not gone up since launch.
