How Much Does It Cost to Fix a Chromebook Screen? What Schools Actually Charge
Five districts publish their Chromebook damage fees. The same cracked screen costs $23 in one and $175 in another. Here is why, and how to set a schedule you can defend.

Ask a parent and a technology director the same question, how much does it cost to fix a Chromebook screen, and you get two answers that are nowhere near each other. The parent wants to know what the school is going to bill them. The director wants to know what the part and the labor actually cost. Those two numbers are rarely the same, and in most districts nobody has written down why.
We went looking at what districts publish. Five of them post their damage fee schedules openly, and the spread is not small. The same cracked screen runs $23 in one district and $175 in another. One district charges nothing at all the first time it happens.
None of those districts are wrong. They are answering different questions.
How much does it cost to fix a Chromebook screen?
For a district repairing in house, a non-touch Chromebook LCD panel runs roughly $20 to $50 in parts, and a touch screen assembly runs roughly $85 to $140. What a school charges a family is a separate decision, and published district fee schedules for a damaged screen currently range from $0 to $175 depending on the district's billing model.
The gap between those two numbers is the entire subject of this article. Parts cost is a procurement fact. The fee is a policy choice, and it is the one that ends up in front of a parent.
What schools actually charge for a broken Chromebook screen

Two things stand out.
Henderson County republishes the schedule every year, and you can watch the market move in it. Their touch screen charge fell from $115 in 2025-26 to $85 in 2026-27, while the non-touch replacement fee rose from $369 to $411. Parts got cheaper. Whole devices got more expensive.
Beaverton does not charge for the first incident at all. Every student in grades 6 through 12 is auto-enrolled in a damage protection program, and charges only begin on the second documented incident. That policy is only possible if you can prove, per device and per student, that this is the second one.
The four models, and what each one is optimizing for
Actual parts cost. You charge what the part cost you. It is the easiest model to defend to a parent because the invoice is arithmetic, not judgment. It is the hardest to administer, because it means maintaining a price list per part and per device model, and republishing it when vendor pricing moves.
Tiered by severity. Damage is sorted into a handful of buckets with one price each. Howard County uses four tiers, with a damaged screen sitting in Tier 3 at $100. Administratively this is the lightest model to run, and it absorbs the awkward cases, because a tech does not have to itemize a chassis with three broken things.
Single flat rate. One number for any standard repair. Milford charges $175 whether the tech replaced a $23 panel or spent an hour on hinges. It over-charges cheap repairs and under-charges expensive ones by design, and the trade is that no family ever gets a surprise and no tech ever has to price anything.
Escalating by incident count. The first one is free, the second costs something, the third costs more. This is the only model of the four that prices behavior rather than parts, and the only one that requires real history to operate.
There is no correct answer here. There is only the question of whether your fee schedule and your system agree with each other, and that is where most districts run into trouble.
The model you pick decides what your software has to do
This is the part that usually gets discovered in October rather than in June.
A flat-rate schedule needs almost nothing. One fee, applied to any repair. A spreadsheet can survive it.
A per-part schedule needs a fee catalog that lives somewhere other than a PDF, because the moment your prices move you have to be certain that the number a technician quotes at the counter is the same number that appears on the invoice. In our invoicing, damage fees come from a maintained fine catalog rather than being typed in per incident, so a price change happens in one place and every subsequent charge inherits it.
An escalating schedule needs something a spreadsheet genuinely cannot do. To charge $50 for the second incident and $100 for the third, you have to be able to answer "how many times has this happened to this student" with something a parent cannot argue with. That means every incident, on every device, attached to the person who had it, going back years. Incident management keeps that history per device and per user, and the repeat-incident reporting is what makes an escalating policy administrable instead of theoretical.
If your fee schedule promises escalation and your records cannot prove incident number two, you do not have an escalating policy. You have a flat-rate policy with extra steps.
Charging the family is the easy part
Producing the invoice is trivial. Producing it in November, for a device checked out in August, to a family that says the crack was already there, is the part that costs districts real money.
We have written before about the repair workflow itself, the intake and routing and turnaround side. The billing side hinges on one thing: whether you documented the device's condition at the moment it changed hands, and again at the moment the damage was reported.
That is why incident capture in our system is a capture-and-confirm photo flow rather than a text field. The person reporting the damage photographs it, and the record carries the image, the date, the device, and the student. When a family disputes a $140 touch screen charge four months later, the conversation is about a photograph with a timestamp instead of about whose memory is better.
The same record is what turns into the charge. An incident links directly to an invoice, so the damage that was documented and the fee that was billed are the same object rather than two systems that have to be reconciled by hand. Families pay online through the parent portal, which removes the part of this process that consumes the most front-office time: collecting money in envelopes.
Fee waivers are where most schedules quietly break
Howard County's schedule includes one line that is easy to skim past: students receiving Free and Reduced Meal services are charged a reduced amount.
Almost every district has some version of this commitment. Very few administer it cleanly. The two common approaches are to bill everyone and refund the families who qualify, or to ask someone in the front office to remember who to skip. The first generates invoices to families who should never have received one. The second depends on a person and a list.
Both fail in the same direction, and they fail against the families least able to absorb the error.
The cleaner approach is to waive before the charge exists. Your SIS already carries the economically disadvantaged flag. For districts that run a device insurance program rather than a straight fee schedule, the same logic applies to premiums: qualifying students are waived before a premium is created, and the record carries an explicit waived state so staff can see why there is no charge instead of assuming something was missed.

Picking the number
If you are setting a schedule for next year, the useful question is not what other districts charge. It is which of the four models your district can actually administer.
Choose actual parts cost if you have someone who will maintain the price list. Choose tiered or flat if you do not, and accept that you will over-charge some repairs and under-charge others in exchange for never arguing about a line item. Choose escalating only if your records can prove incident number two, because the policy is unenforceable without it.
Then publish it before August, and make sure the number your technician says out loud is the number that shows up on the invoice.
